Description
White Hill in Hampshire, UK, is a paragliding site with an elevation of 180 meters. It is occasionally used for soaring and is accessible only to full members of the Thames Valley Hang Gliding Club (TVHGC). The wind direction suitable for this site is from WNW to NW. The general OS Grid Reference for the location is SU 518566, situated on the B3051 south of Kingsclere, approximately 8 miles from both Basingstoke and Newbury.
There are several restrictions to be aware of:
- No flying if horses are around, typically on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until about 10:30 am.
- Freemantle Park Down, the northerly continuation of White Hill, must not be flown due to horses in the fields below.
- A maximum of 5 wings are allowed in the air at any one time.
Sensitivity to the presence of horses is crucial. Horses can be easily spooked by low-flying gliders, so avoid flying low over them and take time to communicate with other users of the area to prevent issues.
Parking is available off the B3051 heading up White Hill on the left-hand side coming from Kingsclere. Be cautious of potential thefts. No vehicular access is allowed beyond the public car park; you must walk to the take-off point using the designated footpaths.
The take-off area is a large grassy space at approximately 230 meters (770 feet) AMSL. Bottom landing is limited and should be done beyond the trees before the crop fields. Slope landing is preferred, but be cautious of the trees. Top landing is possible but watch out for the fence and trees that might cause rotor. There are large fields behind the launch area.
Hazards include other model aircraft flyers, numerous trees, and the potential for rotor effects. Be mindful of picnickers, horse riders, walkers, and joggers. The B3051 road is below, so avoid getting too low and make timely decisions to land.
For cross-country flying, note the close proximity to RAF Odiham in a NW wind direction.
