Description
Bjønnberget in Oppland, Norway, offers a paragliding site with an elevation of 742 meters. This site is regularly used and provides good opportunities for cross-country flights. The site record is 81.5 km.
Bjønnberget is characterized by exposed rock, which helps generate thermals even when the wind direction is not ideal. The launch is a cliff start, and the landing zone is slightly west of Høljerast bridge.
To get there, drive from Dokka towards Fagernes, then turn right towards Etnedal at Høljerast. Continue for about 3.5-4 km until you reach a farm with a large white main building on the left. Take the side road to the right, which slopes upwards. After a few kilometers on the ridge, keep right, pass a lake on the left, and drive until you reach a turnaround spot. From there, take the path on the left side. The total hike is a few hundred meters, mostly downhill.
As of June 4, 2017, small pine trees are growing well at the take-off area. It might be helpful to clear some of these with a handsaw before laying out your paraglider. There are about 20-30 small pine bushes under 1 meter tall. The flat area at the back can be used to lay out your wing, but good canopy control is required due to the steep and rocky nature of the launch. The parking/turnaround area is small, so if there are many cabin visitors, parking might be an issue.
