Description
Located on the southwest side of the valley near Høljerast and Ørneberget by Dokka, this site was used in the 1980s. The original ramp has decayed, and the access road is overgrown. You can either drive off at 'Kvernstugu' on a gravel road up to a barrier or turn left a meter after crossing the bridge over Etna at Høljerast. Drive through the barrier (40 NOK fee), and continue for about 1.5 km. Follow the gravel road upwards until a road branches off to the right, marked by some old concrete pipes. Continue past a shed, an old sheep barn, and a small marsh on the left, then turn right again. From here, a 4WD vehicle is recommended, and it’s a 2-minute walk to the launch site. Without a 4WD, it’s a 10-15 minute walk.
The landing zone is approximately 2.6 km away, so don't wait until you're just above the treetops to head for landing.
In May, consider hiking up from the old Etna train station in the west at Leirskogen. The road described above is recommended for those flying and carrying equipment, although it hasn't been personally tested. The launch site remains excellent, with ample space for wing layout and a suitable slope for paragliding. The view is beautiful, and modern wings provide good altitude for a safe flight.
