Best Conditions
Description
Hohe Geba in Germany is a popular paragliding site with an elevation of 520 meters and a height difference of 130-180 meters. This site is frequently used and offers good soaring conditions, making it possible to achieve impressive cross-country flights. Top landing is possible, but it's recommended to consult with local pilots beforehand.
Flying is feasible with southeast winds, but the optimal conditions are with south winds at around 20 km/h.
The starting point can be accessed via Stepfershausen - Träbes. Upon entering Träbes, turn left at the Träbeser Bauernstube into a downhill field path. Parking is available at the forest edge near the launch site. The launch site is visible from the guesthouse, where you can also pay for your day membership.
For takeoff, pilots usually head right in the lift band before the tree line, gaining altitude along the ridge. Be mindful of the wind sock at the base of the hill to recognize thermal releases.
Landing is typically done at the top by experienced pilots. Otherwise, land at the base of the hill on the meadow. In strong winds or gusty conditions, landing on the lower meadows is tolerated. Be cautious of free-roaming bulls and leave the area immediately after landing.
In case of an emergency landing on the east side, use the mowed meadow opposite the lake or the field path if the meadow is not mowed.
Hazards include east or west winds, which can make flying stressful and dangerous. Avoid flying over the tree line to the right in southwest or west winds due to turbulence. Do not start to the left in east winds to avoid sinking and potential collapses near the wind sock.
Top landing requires skill, and pilots should be aware of lee areas and maintain sufficient distance from the tree line to avoid rotors. Alternatively, land at the bottom and hike back up.
Rules to follow:
- Right of way on the slope.
- Avoid top landing when other pilots are in the start window.
- Club members have authority; follow their instructions.
- Request a site briefing before your first flight.
- Park considerately to allow space for others.
- Do not litter.

The site has seen significant flights, such as a 195.9 km flight on May 3, 2006, to Magdeburg. With south winds around 20 km/h, a trip to Träbes is worthwhile.
The site offers consistent soaring conditions in winter and strong thermals in early spring, providing excellent flying experiences. The southern area of Gebaflieger e.V. connects to thermals over the Geba, with the ridge offering substantial lift. Access is through Träbes, and the entire slope is ecologically significant, located within a biosphere reserve. In spring, the area blooms with purple pasque flowers, so avoid entering the nature reserve. Information and guest fees are available through the club.

Thanks to negotiations with conservation groups, this site is also approved by the 1st Drachenflugclub Thüringer Wald e.V. Rhön pilots and guests can register at the Träbeser Bauernstuben or contact Frank Wöhner. The site is highly recommended for its excellent conditions.
Safe reverse launching is essential, and the site is only suitable for experienced pilots. Reflect on the right-of-way rules before starting. Land on mowed areas of the agricultural cooperative near Seeba or by the lake.
With continental high pressure, winds often come from the south or southeast, making the site suitable for soaring, with better thermals in spring. It is a great alternative to Reichenhausen or Wasserkuppe.
