Description

Stove is a rarely used paragliding site known for its thermal soaring and cross-country flights eastbound along the ridge. The main attraction here is thermic flying along the Book Cliffs. The W-NW launch is situated a bit higher up. For more detailed information on cross-country flying from this site, visit [Wilder Adventures](https://www.wilderadventures.com/launch/1178/stovepipe-de-beque). The local club, Western Slope Soaring, provides additional resources and community support. You can find more information on their [website](https://westernslopesoaring.com/stove). Description: Stove is an evening site that offers magical soaring and thermic flying. Located on BLM land, it features a vertical relief of over 500 meters (1500+ feet). The site provides a stunning view of the desert and the Book Cliffs. Minimum Pilot Rating: P3 Driving Directions: Take Hwy 139 North from the Loma gas station. After 12.1 miles, take the BLM dirt road to the base of the Book Cliffs. Driving GPS Location: 39°22'17.0"N 108°48'47.6"W Launch: The launch faces WSW. The NW launch is above the main launch near the weather station. Please avoid disturbing the small tree on the SE side of the launch area. The takeoff requires strong launching skills and has limited room for aborting. Launch GPS Location: Not provided Landing: Preferred landing is in the desert to the south. Landing GPS Location: Not provided Site Briefing: During the summer, it is best to launch at 6 pm or later. In winter (December - February), you can launch at any time. Avoid launching mid-day during the summer. Hike up the ridge line to the launch coordinates. You can typically soar right in front of the launch or catch the house thermal just down the ridge. Once above the Book Cliffs, enjoy hours of magical evening air. Great flights can be had staying local, venturing north along Douglas Pass Road, or east along the Book Cliffs. Be mindful of the airspace north of Grand Junction Airport. Access Notes: The south entrance is preferred, allowing you to land next to your car. Be vigilant for dust devils if landing early. Flyable Conditions: Winds should be below 17 mph on launch. The site is flyable from NorthWest to SouthWest to South. Stovepipe Weather Station: Not provided Other Info: Radio Frequency: 151.955 (No DCS) Telegram Chat: Western Slope XC For more information, contact High Desert Paragliding through their [Facebook group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/500808716694045/). There are no membership fees, but the club asks that you sign in at the registry at each site to help prove land use to the BLM and maintain the road.
