Parapente Mordor, CO

Mordor is a mountain drive 'n hike site with multiple aspects, including one of the few north launches in the area. It is rarely used, but offers thermalling and some cross-country (XC) opportunities. Visiting pilots must get a briefing and should not drive up alone. Access is from the south, as the north of the launch is private property. Minimum Pilot Rating: P3 Driving Directions: Located about 30 minutes from Fruita. Take 16 Road north from Fruita all the way to the landing zone (LZ). Please slow down to reduce dust when passing the houses at the base of the Book Cliffs. Once at the LZ, take Lapham Canyon Road to the base of the trail to launch. Ensure you park off the road to allow others to pass. The road to launch is bumpy but passable by a Subaru or similar vehicle. Launch: The launch is on either side of the eastern spine. If launching to the north, ensure you leave enough altitude to make the LZ or land at the oil pad near the trail parking. Landing Zone: The landing area is a large grassy area at the base of the valley. Do not land on the private property beyond the fence. Site Briefing: Launch from the top of the eastern spine. Mordor offers great evening soaring along the south-facing bowl. XC pilots will find Mordor a great option when the local convergence dips south and makes Douglas unlaunchable. BLM camping is permitted in the LZ. Access Notes: Both the launch and LZ are on BLM land. Please be respectful of the private land just behind the launch. Do not land on the private land up canyon from the LZ. Flyable Conditions: Winds should be below 15 mph on launch. The aspects are North, NorthEast, SouthWest, and South.
