Description

St. John Mountain, located in Mendocino National Forest near Stonyford, CA, offers a unique paragliding experience. The South Launch is situated at an elevation of 6300 feet MSL, with landing zones approximately 1200 feet MSL. The site is known for its thermal flying, often reaching altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet MSL, with a record of 14,000 feet MSL. Access to the launch site requires a 4WD vehicle due to the steep, rough dirt road. From the Maxwell exit on I5, head west to Stonyford, then follow M10 west, turn right at Fouts Springs, and follow signs to the top. The drive takes about an hour. The South Launch features a large setup area with a dirt ramp extending over a shallow rocky bowl. Winds are typically light, and it's crucial to watch for movement in the pine tree out front. The West Launch, located 1/3 mile north, offers a steep shale slope near the peak, suitable for launching with a bit of wind. Most flights at St. John are cross-country (XC). The valley winds are variable but usually light from the southeast to northeast. Carry landing streamers for guidance. The primary bailout beyond Fouts Springs consists of three round fields north of the Visitors' Center. It's generally easy to glide out to Stonyford, where there are two insured landing zones in town. Avoid landing on private properties like Flying S or Pendel. The flying season is limited to summer and fall, as the road may be snowed in until May or later. St. John is considered a challenging site, typically requiring H4 ratings, though experienced H3 pilots can fly with proper site introduction. Paragliders usually prefer nearby Potato Hill. Facilities include developed campgrounds at Letts Lake with restrooms, picnic tables, fire pits, and water. There are also undeveloped campgrounds like Dixie Glade. Stonyford offers a small grocery store, gas station, and bar/cafe. For more detailed information, visit [Sonoma Wings St. John Guide](http://sonomawings.com/site-guides/st-john/). Always check in with local pilots for current conditions before flying. St. John is not a crowded site, and you may find yourself alone on many weekends.
