Description
The takeoff site at Pfyffe is situated at an elevation of 1410 meters and is primarily used by hang gliders, offering good cross-country (XC) potential. Paragliders occasionally use this site, with moderate XC opportunities. Access to the takeoff is by car, but the last 300 meters are on a private road restricted to club members only. Note that there are no takeoffs allowed towards the south.
The official landing zone is at Landi, Plaffeien, at an elevation of 850 meters. Another landing option is Schrapflisbühl. Always land in mowed areas and exit through high grass quickly. Be cautious of turbulence when flying in Bise conditions and consider switching to the Gurli takeoff site.
The flying season runs from April to October, provided the area is free of snow. Avoid flying in crosswinds. The wind directions suitable for Pfyffe are W, NW, N, and NO.
Meeting points are typically at 10:30 AM or 12:30 PM at the Hotel Kaiseregg parking lot, the Sellen riding arena, or on Saturdays from 12:00 PM at the Landi Plaffeien parking lot. Carpooling is encouraged, and departures are scheduled on the hour.
The village of Plaffeien is located on a small plateau surrounded by wooded hills extending to the Schwarzsee and the first peaks of the Fribourg Pre-Alps, such as the Kaiseregg. The Gurli flying area is ideal for flights in NO/O wind conditions, especially during Bise. Pfyffe is suitable for W, NW, N, and NO winds but requires club membership for access to the takeoff site.
