Description

The Pilatus region in Kriens, Switzerland, offers a medium-difficult paragliding experience with an elevation of 2062 meters. This site is frequently used and is known for its excellent cross-country (XC) potential. The site record stands at 171.4 km. The launch area is sparsely vegetated and steep, requiring good launch technique. The takeoff direction is south to southwest, making winter flights unsuitable. Access to the launch site is via the funicular from Alpnachstad or the aerial cableway from Kriens to the summit of Pilatus. The landing zones are typically Alpnachstad or Allmend Luzern. Wind conditions on the mountain can be tricky, especially with strong Bise winds. Pay close attention to the wind indicators or follow the guidance of experienced pilots. The area falls within the CTR zone Buochs-Alpnach, so strict adherence to flight regulations is necessary. The launch site is located below the round hotel near the cogwheel railway station. To reach it, use the stairs at the older hotel and then walk back below the terrace. The terrain becomes steep quickly, so be cautious of the sometimes unpredictable winds. The Pilatus is one of the oldest and most alpine flying areas in Central Switzerland, surrounded by airfields, making flight planning more demanding. Familiarity with the wind systems at the launch sites is crucial. However, the effort is well rewarded with exciting flights, significant altitudes, active thermals over Lucerne, and breathtaking views of the lakes and mountains. Thermal flights in summer are particularly impressive, with the Matthorn being an excellent spot. Scenic flights over Lucerne are spectacular but require the right conditions. Due to the complex airspace structure, cross-country flights can be challenging. Classic routes include FAI triangles or out-and-return flights towards Interlaken (Glaubenberg, Hagleren, Brienzer Rothorn). A flight radio is necessary for cross-country flights. Military airspace restrictions mean that during regular operating hours, flights are only allowed from Klimsenhorn to Luzerner Allmend and Kriens. Outside these hours, additional flights from Pilatus Kulm to Alpnachstad, Luzerner Allmend, and Kriens are permitted. Pilots unfamiliar with Pilatus should seek local advice due to the unique wind conditions. The correct assessment of the main wind direction at Pilatus Kulm is vital, as ground-level wind direction can be misleading. The Klimsenmatte launch site offers easier wind direction assessment, but it is challenging to launch there during Bise winds. The north side of Pilatus often has excellent thermals later in the afternoon, making evening flights over Lucerne possible even after 5 PM in summer.
