Pedro Bernardo, located in the Sierra de Gredos and overlooking the Tiétar Valley, offers excellent thermal conditions for cross-country flights, especially in summer. The site is known for its technical flights during the warmer months, making it a favorite among experienced pilots.
The town of Pedro Bernardo, situated at an elevation of 806 meters, is often referred to as the "Balcony of Tiétar" due to its stunning panoramic views of the valley and the Montes de Toledo. The area is 125 km west of Madrid, accessible via Highway 501.
There are three main takeoff points: south, east, and west, all within a 10-20 minute drive from the town. For days with a north wind, Real de San Vicente is a viable alternative, located about 30 minutes away. The prevailing wind in Pedro Bernardo is southwest, which allows for interesting flights towards Candeleda and even Plasencia, 160 km away. The area holds a distance record of 206 km, achieved by Borja Rodriguez in 2003.
The south launch, at 950 meters, is the least used but was constructed for the 2003 National Championship. It is spacious enough to accommodate multiple gliders simultaneously, with the landing area clearly visible from the launch site. The thermal activity in this region is robust, making it a good starting point for flights along the central system, especially during the season. Winter flights are also possible due to the thermal activity generated by the sun-heated hillsides.
To reach Pedro Bernardo from Madrid, take the 501 road to the junction signposted Pedro Bernardo, then continue for about 10 minutes on the local road leading to the town. The landing area is located just before the intersection, on the left side of the 501, and 100 meters before the gas station.
The takeoff points are on the Risco de la Sierpe, east of the town. The main takeoff faces west at an elevation of 1250 meters, while the south and east takeoffs are at 950 meters and 1000 meters, respectively. Access these points by taking the paved road from Pedro Bernardo to the Port of Serranillos, then following the path towards Mijares. The road is in good condition for passenger cars, and the climb to the west takeoff takes about 30 minutes from the landing area.
