Description

The Ouen Toro site, located at the southern tip of Nouméa, is a technical soaring spot with a stunning sea view. It's a popular meeting place for local paragliders, especially in the morning before the trade winds pick up and make the site unmanageable. This location is also used for tandem flights and training sessions by Ecole EFVL Parapente Plein Vent. When the trade winds are not too strong, local paragliders gather at Ouen Toro for soaring sessions, typically in the morning and late afternoon. You can park your car near the lagoon (at the Côte Blanche launch area) and hike up to the takeoff point. Soaring at Ouen Toro can become quite technical as the trade winds strengthen, so it's essential to monitor the weather and the whitecaps forming on the lagoon. A pilot's license is mandatory to fly at this site. For landing, avoid the boulevard and aim for the narrow strip of land along the lagoon. Be aware that the trade winds create a venturi effect on the terraced grassy area facing the parking lot (to the left of the takeoff point on the satellite image). Landing at the top is also an option, which may seem straightforward in videos but requires skill. For more insights on flying at Ouen Toro, engage with the locals at the takeoff point—they are the best source of information on the site's topography and potential hazards.
