Conditions Optimales
Description
This site is occasionally used for thermal soaring and some cross-country (XC) flights. West wind soaring is possible but can be unpleasant.
The region is CA - USA. The site record is 36.0 km.
Both launches are close to each other, and their use will depend on the strength of the day and the wind direction. It's important to watch the cycles to see how quickly conditions are building. Both launches have adequate room to lay out a couple of gliders, but there is nothing particularly remarkable about either.
If conditions are just starting to turn on, the safest bet is to use the upper (second) launch and soar the ridge connecting the two launches. This makes top landing for a re-launch fairly easy. If conditions are already on and cycling, the wind direction will dictate which of the two launches is preferable.
Lower West Launch: You can launch into the west-facing bowl or the south face but lower down.
Note: Be cautious of a metal pole stand right below and in front of the launch area, where the border patrol commonly parks. This pole stand is used for border patrol instruments and cannot be removed. There are also many other unidentified hazards.
For more detailed comments, see the main takeoff description.
