Description
The Nuthouse in Ojai, California, is a hike-up launch site located off Highway 33, near the Cozy Dell Trailhead and Friends Ranch Packing House. The initial part of the trail is on private property but soon enters Los Padres National Forest. The hike is challenging, especially with a heavy pack, so good footwear, gloves, and a walking stick are recommended. The hike can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on your fitness level.
The site is best flown in the fall, winter, and spring during Santa Ana weather. It's advisable to start the hike early to avoid the heat. The launch is on the west side of Nordhoff Ridge and is typically soarable by late morning. The site is more of a gateway to higher flying areas rather than a primary flying site. Pilots usually bench up to the east-west ridge and then move towards Spine One and further along Nordhoff Ridge.
The Nuthouse is often used for cross-country flights towards Santa Barbara, especially on days with east flow at altitude. The site can handle various wind conditions, but it's more protected from northeast flow than southeast. Pilots should be cautious of venturi effects and strong updrafts, especially in the summer.
There is no designated landing zone (LZ), so pilots need to scout their own. The site is considered advanced due to the challenging hike, lack of a designated LZ, and variable wind conditions. It's recommended to fly with a local pilot for your first visit.
