Description
Located in the Interlaken region of Switzerland, the Niederhorn offers an excellent paragliding experience with an elevation of 1945 meters. This site is frequently used and is known for its good cross-country potential. Access to the launch site is facilitated by a mountain railway.
The launch area is a gently sloping grassy hill, suitable for both paragliders and delta wings, with a primary launch direction towards the south. Hikers have the right of way, so pilots should start either below or above the path.
The launch window faces southeast and is considered easy. The launch site is at an altitude of 1920 meters and can be reached with a short 2-minute walk from the top of the mountain railway. Coordinates for the launch site are 7.77669719, 46.71130378.
To get there, take the Postauto from Unterseen to Beatenbucht, then the funicular to Beatenberg. From there, take the group cable car to the summit. The launch area is a large, flat meadow.
This site is interesting year-round and offers plenty of space for all pilots, including beginners and occasional flyers. Delta wings can only launch to the west using a ramp.
The southern slopes of the Niederhorn provide reliable thermals early in the day. However, a northern breeze can be unfavorable for flying here. Cross-country flights are possible towards the south (Oberland) and east (Meiringen), but be cautious of the active military airfield in Meiringen during weekdays.
In the afternoon, there is often a slight tailwind, so it is advisable to arrive early at the launch site.
The Interlaken military airfield is used as a helicopter base for REGA. Please adhere to the posted usage regulations.
