Emmetten, located in the heart of Switzerland by Lake Lucerne, offers a stunning paragliding experience. The launch site is conveniently situated next to the mountain station of the cable car, providing easy access. The large grassy launch area allows for a smooth takeoff directly towards the deep blue waters of the lake.
The site is particularly favorable in the late afternoon, often providing excellent flying and soaring conditions. The cable car operates until 19:00 in the summer, giving you ample time to enjoy your flights. The landing area, although initially appearing challenging due to its slope, is relatively easy to approach and offers a sufficiently long glide path considering the prevailing valley wind conditions.
Emmetten is renowned for its beautiful soaring conditions, especially with the Bise wind. Cross-country flights are possible, and top landings are feasible with plenty of space available. The village of Emmetten lies at mid-altitude, and the launch site is northeast of the mountain inn, on a large grassy slope that quickly becomes steep.
The main launch site is located directly next to the hotel, offering a large and ideal area for takeoff. There are also additional launch sites to the southwest and southeast, each with specific characteristics and wind considerations. The area is generally very easy to fly, with a continuously steepening launch site. Except during Föhn conditions, almost any wind direction is manageable due to the sheltered location. In summer, a light thermal northwest wind is typically present, making it an ideal launch site.
The airspace regulations must be observed, and there are special rules that pilots need to be aware of. Most launch directions can be utilized right by the mountain station, with plenty of space available. The site even holds a world record for the mass launch of over 270 paragliders.
The cable car ride from Emmetten to Niederbauen takes about 8 minutes, with two cabins accommodating 8 people each. The service operates year-round from 7:00 to 19:00, with extended hours in the summer.
The landing areas in Emmetten are at 750 meters above sea level, with a slight slope. The main landing area is near the Restaurant Schlüssel, while the Gruob landing area is smaller and located near the valley station. This smaller landing area is not recommended for beginners due to potential turbulence from valley winds.
