Description
The site is a regularly used soaring location with multiple takeoff options and straightforward toplanding. It is situated in controlled airspace, so special rules apply. For detailed airspace information, please refer to the following link: https://shpf.co.uk/flying/flying-sites/hillend-pentlands-and-moorfoots-flying-sites/
Located in Scotland, UK, this site is managed by the Lanarkshire and Lothian Soaring Club. More information can be found here: https://www.llsclub.co.uk/index.php/sites and https://www.llsclub.co.uk/index.php/moorfoots
The site features a northwest-facing ridge extending 9km, ideal for ridge runs and potential long XC flights towards the English border. The altitude at launch is 1262 feet, and the Edinburgh CTA restricts airspace above 3500 feet.
To get there, travel 20km southeast of Edinburgh on the A7 road towards Galashiels, then take the B7007 Innerleithen road. Park at the crest before the road turns south, ensuring you leave space for large vehicles.
Parking is available in a lay-by, but be cautious of large articulated lorries. The landowners are CANP, and you can notify other aircraft of your activity via the CANP system.
For launching, carry an altimeter set to current QNH due to the airspace above 3500 feet. Optimal soaring conditions allow for launching below the road; otherwise, walk approximately 40m uphill to Wull Muir. In light conditions, walk west past an old quarry to launch from Broad Law or Torfichen Hill.
Top landing is straightforward above the road, while bottom landing is possible anywhere in front of the hill. Be cautious during lambing season and note that the land below the road slopes away at a 1:7 gradient.
Hazards include fast-moving traffic on the B7007, a barbed wire fence at the top of the hill, and a windfarm behind Wull Muir launch. Hill sheep are generally not an issue outside lambing season, but cattle in the area can be easily spooked.
