Description
Meduno, Italy, is a highly frequented paragliding site known for its excellent thermal soaring conditions. While cross-country (XC) flights are possible, achieving a good XC can be challenging. The site offers easy toplanding and multiple takeoff options, particularly for south winds by walking a bit towards the NNW.
The elevation difference of 900 meters provides ample time to catch thermals, making it suitable for long flights. The mix of laminar ridge lift and thermals allows even beginners to enjoy extended flights. The landing area is spacious, with a spot for barbecues and gatherings, often frequented by local pilots.
Meduno is comparable to Bassano but offers a more tranquil flying experience. The launch area features expansive alpine meadows, making it ideal for both hang gliders and paragliders. Shuttle vehicles are available during peak times, and the site is also used by flying schools. Be mindful of the Aviano control zone and special regulations for paragliders and hang gliders, with information available at the landing site.
Accommodations include agritourism options and pensions in the surrounding area. For camping, Lago di Tramonti is a recommended spot. Las Strias offers mini apartments and a small restaurant and bar for a convenient stay.
Important rules to follow include purchasing a flight permit from Sergio at the landing site, as the area is near a large U.S. Air Force base. Acro flying and strong wingovers near the ridge are prohibited. Be cautious of north and east winds, as they can make reaching the landing site difficult. In summer, high cornfields limit options for outlandings, and local farmers may charge fees for landing in their fields.
