Description
Regionals Launch, located in California, USA, sits at approximately 3400 feet MSL on the Cloudland Truck Trail (2N40), north-northeast of AJX. This site is occasionally used for thermal soaring and cross-country (XC) flights. It is particularly useful when the highway road is closed. Access is via the same road as the 750 launch, but high clearance vehicles are recommended.
The site gained its name from hosting the SoCal Region 3 Regionals for three consecutive years starting in 1981. The launch area offers ample space for setting up and launching multiple paragliders and hang gliders, with an easy glide to AJX.
Pilots must familiarize themselves with the site information before arriving. This information does not replace the need for an in-person site briefing from a local pilot or instructor familiar with the area. All launches and landing zones (LZs) require a P3/H3 rating or above. Visitors who do not meet these requirements must schedule instruction or observation with a local instructor before arriving.
Minimum ratings: Intermediate (P3/H3). Refer to the General Site Guidelines for any exceptions.
Type: Slope Launch
Altitude: 3391 feet MSL
Orientation: South, South-Southeast
Best conditions: Light South-Southeast winds (0-10 mph for paragliders, 0-15 mph for hang gliders)
Glide ratio to AJX: 3.5:1
Vehicle access: Dirt road (2WD vehicles with moderate clearance are acceptable)
High Wind and Gusty Wind Conditions:
The Regionals Launch can experience gusty and high winds. Pilots should consider their launching technique and experience before launching in these conditions. Hang glider pilots are encouraged to use a wire man and obtain launch assistance during periods of high winds or gust spreads. The thermic air may be rougher than anticipated, so caution is advised.
Regionals Caution:
The drop-off is steep, and pilots who mislaunch may roll down the hill.
Additional Launch Hazards & Obstacles:
The entire Marshall front range is a key thermal generator and can experience extreme mid-day thermic conditions. There have been instances of gliders being turned back into the hill and paraglider collapses close to the terrain. Wildlife dangers include snakes, mountain lions, and bears. Thunderstorms, particularly in the spring and fall, can lead to gust fronts. Be vigilant for a "wall of dust" on days with towering cumulus clouds.
Driving up: Take Cloudland Truck Trail (2N40) up from AJX. It is a dirt road, so use caution while driving.
