Kronplatz, located in Trentino-Suedtirol, Italy, is a popular paragliding site with an elevation of 2260 meters and a height difference of 1200 meters. It is frequently used and offers good soaring conditions with the possibility for cross-country flights. The best takeoff is from the area next to the mountain station.
Kronplatz is an excellent alternative for northern wind directions, except during Föhn conditions. Despite being on the north side, it is flyable with normal north winds, thanks to the significant thermals from the plateau. There is a large landing area available.
In the evenings, when the wind weakens or shifts to a more northerly component, Kronplatz provides optimal takeoff opportunities. The site is also suitable for skiing, with wide and not too steep carving slopes.
Kronplatz is particularly popular during the winter season. The mountain is somewhat isolated, making direct connections for cross-country flights challenging. However, there are takeoff options in multiple wind directions, including south, northeast, and northwest, all easily accessible from the mountain station. There are also other takeoff directions, such as southwest and west, which offer good thermals from the basin but are slightly more challenging for takeoff and flight. Be cautious, as landing options to the south are scarce.
In terms of flying, Kronplatz is a winter flying site, ideal for soaring in dynamic lift with weak to moderate north winds, even in summer. However, opportunities for cross-country flights are limited.
Landing areas include meadow fields at the base of the slope next to the valley station of the Kronplatzbahn in Reischach. Note that there is no windsock. Additional emergency landing fields are available at the base of the slope.
Flying can be dangerous with stronger south winds. Reliable thermals are best from April to May, but even in winter, flights can reach over 3000 meters. While cross-country opportunities are not abundant, there are some possibilities along the Pustertal and the Dolomites. Beautiful top landings are also possible.
