Description

The launch site is located slightly below the Klingenstock and can be reached in about 5 minutes by following the ski slope from the summit in an easterly direction until it turns north again. Launching directly from the summit and all launches towards the south are strictly prohibited as the area is a wildlife sanctuary. Stoos is a village and ski resort above Morschach/Brunnen in the canton of Schwyz. The village is situated at 1,305 meters on a high plateau. The ski area extends up to an altitude of 1,922 meters, offering paragliders high-altitude flights and challenging, unmarked steep descents for sporty tourers down to Morschach. Stoos is car-free. Access is only possible via funicular (from Schwyz-Schlattli) or aerial cableway (from Morschach). The funicular (Stoosbahn) was built in 1933 and covers a height difference of 786 meters over a distance of 1,383 meters, making it one of the steeper funiculars in the world with a gradient of 78%. In the ski area, a small ski lift followed by a long heated chairlift leads to the Klingenstock. Ski starters have advantages, and tickets can only be purchased in the village at the Klingenstock ski lift. Enjoyable flights to Stoos are possible when there is fog in the valley, with connections to Fronalpstock nearby, or directly to the cable car station in Morschach, Brunnen Urmiberg, or Schwyz. In winter, it serves as a nice alternative to the more universal Fronalpstock, which is also used for training. Difficulty: Be cautious as weather and winds can change rapidly here. Never fly during Föhn winds, not even with a Föhn tendency. Be aware that the high fog below Stoos can appear very suddenly and can be very thick. There is a low cable just above the forest near the landing site in Morschach, which can be a hazard for extremely low flyers. Special Features: If you want to fly from Klingenstock, you have no choice but to walk about 800 meters through the village and then up the first small hill (a small ski lift goes up there). There are plans to also connect this first section with a chairlift. On the way, you pass the ski house where you can grab a bite before your flight (there's always a grill in operation in good weather, even in winter). Follow the signposts to the Klingenstock lift and then follow the ski lift. Soaring Conditions: North side during Bise winds. There is a total ban on summit launches, especially towards the south. Please adhere strictly to the permitted launch zones.
