Description

The Jenkins site is near Horse Pens 40 in Springville, Alabama, approximately 30 minutes east of Birmingham. Named after the owner who permits pilots to launch from the site, Jenkins is managed by the Alabama Hang Glider Association. The launch is a cliff overlooking a county road and agricultural fields, facing SSE. A wind speed of 6-10 MPH is required for a safe launch. The launch features a metal ramp extending over the cliff, providing space for a few steps before takeoff. The site is approximately 750 feet AGL and offers ridge soaring opportunities. Top landing is possible. The primary landing zone (LZ) and bailout areas are identified, with permission granted to land there under certain conditions. The bailout area is a small yard with power lines, a barbed wire fence, and a house forming its perimeter, making it challenging for hang gliders. Top landing in Mr. Jenkins' field is allowed. Jenkins, located on Chandler Mountain, faces 150-160 degrees and is a top landable, 750-foot AGL cliff launch rated for Hang 3. The ridge extends about 12 miles. The site is about one hour north of Birmingham, near Horse Pens 40. For paragliders, the LZ is straight out from the launch at a 4:1 glide ratio. For hang gliders, the LZ is to the south with a glide ratio of about 6.5:1. The site is primarily used by hang gliders, with some paragliding activity.
