Description
Altitude: 1142 meters, Height Difference: 703 meters. This site is occasionally used and is also good for cross-country flights. Most flights originate from the west takeoff.
Region: Germany. Nearby flights can be viewed [here](http://www.hcrb.de/). The site record is 189.2 km.
Takeoff: There are two takeoff sites on top of the mountain, facing NNW-NNE and S-SW. The south site is very large and easy to use with south winds but more challenging with west winds. The north site is smaller but still suitable for tandem flights. German pilots need a B-License to fly here due to the longer distance to the landing field. Both sites are also suitable for hang gliders.
The terrain in the Southern Black Forest is beautiful but demanding. The glide path to the landing field is long, with few emergency landing areas. Thermals significantly ease the flight. A-License pilots need club membership and an introduction. Guests can fly with a B-License if an HCRB instructor is present. Be aware of airspace: Airspace D (not CTR) from Basel starts west of Hochblauen at 5500 ft MSL (as of 2008). Land only at the designated landing field; cemetery landings are prohibited. The landing field is challenging for hang gliders due to its location on a hilltop.
More information can be found [here](http://www.hcrb.de/).
North Takeoff: Special caution is required with east wind influence, which can cause strong downdrafts in the takeoff area. Due to the steep terrain, any aborted takeoff must be done early. Pilots unfamiliar with the terrain should orient themselves left towards the landing field immediately after takeoff, as there are no landing options in front of the takeoff area.
The Blauen is a very demanding flying site that reacts to the slightest changes in wind direction and strength. Therefore, only pilots who meet the following criteria, in addition to legal requirements, are allowed to fly here:
- Unrestricted pilot's license (B-License) (exceptions for guest flights are detailed on the website)
- A paraglider with a glide ratio greater than 5.5
- Introduction by HCRB members
