Description

Winkipop Launch, Bells Beach - Winkipop This site is primarily for advanced hang gliders (HG) and is rarely used. It offers the possibility of cross-country (XC) flights. The launch is located at Winkipop, 30 meters (100 feet) above sea level, and is rated for advanced HG pilots only. Paragliders (PG) are not permitted to take off or land here due to local regulations and sensitive vegetation. Hang gliders must set up on the west side of the road and carry their equipment across. It is crucial to keep the gate closed and ensure spectators stay out of the fenced area. Light wind conditions are not ideal for takeoff at Winkipop, and there is no beach for landing. Landing options for PGs include toplanding on Southside, while HGs can topland on Winkipop launch in emergencies. Otherwise, landing on nearby beaches is necessary. Southside beach is the closest but can disappear at high tide. Jan Juc and Pt Addis offer larger beaches for landing. HG pilots often aim to reach Anglesea, though there are significant unlandable sections along the way. The Coast Run from Winkipop to Apollo Bay is a notable flight route, first achieved in the early 1990s. This route is now common in firm easterly winds for HGs but remains unachieved for PGs. The flight is challenging, and first attempts should be made with experienced pilots. Minimal landing areas and high tides make this run hazardous, and pilots should use instruments and UHF radio on channel 16. Even experienced inland XC pilots have encountered difficulties here. The site is located near Torquay, 90 km southwest of Melbourne, overlooking the famous surf beach.
