Description

Located in Torquay, Australia, this paragliding site offers a mix of coastal soaring and some cross-country (XC) opportunities. The site is regularly used and provides a scenic coastal experience. Toplanding is possible, making it a versatile spot for paragliders. The main takeoff point is at Southside, situated 35 meters (120 feet) above sea level. This area is rated for supervised paragliding and is recommended for paragliders only. To access the takeoff, park at the Southside carpark and follow the track at the end. Setup and launch from the designated astroturf area to avoid rotor from the cliff edge, which can be challenging for hang gliders. For landing, paragliders can topland on Southside. In emergencies, hang gliders can topland at the Winkipop launch area, located in front of the road and fence. Alternatively, land on the beaches, with Southside being the closest option. However, be cautious as this beach can disappear during high tide. Other landing options include Jan Juc to the east and Pt Addis to the west, both offering larger beaches. Hang gliders typically aim to reach Anglesea, though there are significant unlandable sections along the way. The first flights to Apollo Bay were achieved in the early 1990s and are now common in firm easterly winds. However, this route has not yet been completed by paragliders, although local distance records are frequently broken each season. The flight is challenging, and it is advisable to attempt it with an experienced flyer. Hazards include minimal landing areas along the coast, especially at high tide. The beaches are popular and often crowded, so exercise caution. Pilots are recommended to fly with instruments and a UHF radio set to channel 16. Even highly experienced inland XC pilots have encountered difficulties on this run. For weather updates, refer to the local weather station for near-instantaneous readings.
