Description
The Gnipen, part of the Rossberg mountain range, offers a delightful paragliding experience with its grassy summit. The main takeoff direction is northwest, and the site is occasionally used for soaring and some cross-country flights. Sunset flights over Lake Zug are particularly beautiful.
To reach the takeoff point, you can drive from Arth to Rufiberg-Dürrenboden, covering the first 600 meters of elevation. From PT 1044 on Dürrenboden, it's a 75-minute hike to the Gnipen summit. The takeoff area is a medium-steep grassy slope, making it an ideal launch site.
Flights can be directed towards Walchwil and Lake Zug, or over the Goldau landslide area, with landing typically in a mowed meadow in Arth.
The Rossberg mountain range is located in the Central Swiss Prealps, spanning the cantons of Schwyz and Zug. The highest peak is Wildspitz at 1580 meters, with Gnipen close by at 1568 meters.
Evening flights often benefit from favorable updrafts, and soaring is sometimes possible. In spring, cross-country flights towards Zugerberg, Zug, Engelstock, Mythen, and Urnerland are feasible.
Be aware that wind conditions can vary; calm winds at landing sites may contrast with gusty conditions on Wildspitz and Gnipen. If this occurs, consider hiking down along the path beside the landslide towards Goldau/Rufiberg and waiting for better wind conditions, or descending completely and postponing the flight.
