Description
Gitschenberg, located in Seedorf, Switzerland, is a hidden gem for a relaxing morning flight. The launch site is situated at an elevation of 1310-1365 meters and is accessible via a small cable car that runs once per hour. The launch area is a moderately steep, hilly meadow, which can be a bit challenging due to its uneven and limited space.
The region offers stunning views of Lake Uri, the Reuss Valley, Schächental, and the Schwyzer Alps. The best time to fly here is in the morning, thanks to the east-facing orientation of the launch site. In the spring, the area can also be suitable for longer cross-country flights if the atmospheric conditions are right.
Be cautious of several transport cables in the area, especially one that runs from a farmhouse near the launch site to the upper alp. This cable is not very steep and runs almost parallel to the small road. Additionally, the valley wind in Flüelen can be quite strong in the afternoon and should not be underestimated.
For those interested in soaring, east winds provide good conditions for soaring above the highway. The cable car, Seedorf-Turmmatt, can accommodate up to four people and operates more frequently during the alp season (late May to late August). Outside of this period, you need to contact the Arnold family for service.
There is a small fee of CHF 1.- for using the launch site, and free parking is available with connections to public transport.
