Parapente Garlock, CA

Garlock is a desert mountain site located just south of Ridgecrest, California, ideal for local soaring and cross-country flights. The site is occasionally used by hang gliders and less frequently by paragliders. It is unregulated, and it's recommended for H3 pilots or H2 pilots with an instructor. The launch area is a rocky slope accessible by a 4x4 vehicle. There are two launch points: the upper launch, suitable for light southeast winds, and the lower launch, which is steeper and better for stronger south and southwest winds. The landing zone is a dry lake bed just off Garlock Road, with power lines to the south side and no permanent wind sock. The region features high desert and mountain geography. Summer temperatures in the landing zone can exceed 100°F, with strong thermals and high climbs, so be prepared for cold conditions at altitude. Winds typically increase throughout the day, peaking towards sunset. Winter can be cold, while spring and fall offer cool nights and warm days. Hazards include switchy desert winds, dust devils during launch and landing, low-flying military aircraft, and desert survival challenges in case of mishaps. Snakes, scorpions, and spiders are common at launch and in the landing zone. Cell coverage is poor, so it's crucial to fly within your skill level, use a radio and GPS, and be prepared for desert survival with plenty of water and supplies for an overnight stay.
