Conditions Optimales
Description
Located in Finale Ligure, Italy, this paragliding site offers a unique flying experience. The takeoff altitude is 270 meters, and the site is best used from October to April. Note that landing is forbidden from May 1st to September 30th.
The site is known for its regular use and offers opportunities for soaring and some cross-country (XC) flights. The site record is 6.7 km.
To reach the takeoff point, you can leave your car in any parking area adjacent to Via Aurelia in Varigotti and head towards Finale. Before entering the town, take the right turn towards Le Manie and follow the road uphill for about 2.5 km. Park your car on a curve to the left as indicated on the map. From there, take the barely visible path into the pine forest and walk for about 150 meters to reach the takeoff area.
The takeoff area is typical for Liguria, allowing one wing at a time with a short run-up. Be cautious of the stones that can snag the lines. The takeoff zone is a rounded hillock, which supports launches in three different wind directions but requires careful positioning of the wing. The run-up space is limited to 3-4 meters before encountering bushes, so a minimum wind speed of 5-10 km/h is necessary. Reverse or French launches are recommended. The takeoff area is equipped with two iron benches and a trash bin, and there are 4-5 wind socks.
For landing, the beach at Finale Ligure is long and wide, with flags indicating the correct landing direction. Be mindful of people on the beach. You can pack your wing on tiled surfaces along the wall or the pedestrian walkway. The beach is divided by establishments, but this does not restrict landing.
The beach at Varigotti is also long and wide, but lacks wind indicators except towards Savona. A 360° turn is advisable to determine the drift and landing direction. Typically, landings are made from Ventimiglia towards Savona (East direction), but always verify the wind conditions. Packing the wing can be done on tiled surfaces along the wall or the pedestrian walkway.
In flight, with a southeast wind, you can soar on both sides of the takeoff. To land at Finale, head right from the takeoff, following the ridge where dynamic soaring is possible. At the end of the ridge, cross over to glide safely towards Finale. With an east wind, it's advisable to land exclusively on the beach at Finale Ligure.
For Varigotti, head left from the takeoff, where soaring conditions are often found. Continue along the ridge, crossing a small valley, and follow the ridge to Capo Noli. If conditions deteriorate, move to the beach at 150 meters altitude to avoid landing in the town. With optimal conditions, you can soar to Capo Noli and, with at least 400 meters altitude, continue towards Noli or Spotorno. If necessary, land on the beach at Malpasso between Varigotti and Capo Noli. With a south wind, land exclusively on the beach at Varigotti, heading towards Savona-Ventimiglia.
Flying over the beach and landing there is prohibited from May 1st to September 30th. During the rest of the year, flying is permitted without issues.
