Description
At an altitude of 1890 meters with a height difference of 1290 meters, this site offers medium difficulty for paragliding. It is a highly frequented spot with possibilities for cross-country flights. If the main launch area near the kiosk is crowded, there are alternative official launch sites within approximately 100 meters. The slope is gentle, making it easier to lay out your wing. The main launch area is about a 20-minute walk from the kiosk, where taxis drop off pilots.
Please note that you are not allowed to launch from just anywhere on the mountain. For example, the lift owner between this spot and the official launch site would not be pleased if you did so.
The Emberger Alm in Greifenburg, Austria, is one of the top flying sites in the Alps. It boasts excellent infrastructure combined with a scenic and thermally attractive flying area. This makes it a popular meeting point for the flying community. Numerous competitions and countless cross-country flights with hang gliders and paragliders are held here annually. The Drautal Valley offers good conditions for cross-country beginners with plenty of landing options (always land on mowed fields). Flights into the Pustertal Valley are possible but challenging.
The meeting point is the Fliegercamp at the landing site. From here, a shuttle takes you to the Emberger Alm launch site, which has a height difference of 1100 meters, or to other nearby launch sites. The Emberger Alm features a large meadow with ample space for setup. Launches are only recommended with headwind; west winds can cause turbulence. The main landing site is directly at the Fliegercamp. Be cautious of power lines and follow the landing pattern. The campsite, complete with a swimming lake and high ropes course, is ideal for families. There are also numerous guesthouses and inns in Greifenburg and the surrounding area.
In Greifenburg, the Dünhofer family operates the only taxi service, running two buses with large trailers up the mountain reliably and regularly at 10 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM. On particularly good flying days, they start as early as 9 AM. The fare to the launch site is €6.50. Wolfgang Sattlegger has increased the launch fee to €5.50, which is reasonable for a well-maintained meadow and a friendly atmosphere.
