Conditions Optimales
Description
In the Uri region of Switzerland, the Eggbergen area offers a delightful paragliding experience. Accessible via a cable car from Flüelen, which operates every half hour, you can reach the small ski village of Eggbergen at an altitude of around 1,500 meters. From the top station, it's a 20-minute walk to the launch site, best approached along the ski lift track. The launch site itself is a grassy hilltop with stunning views over the deep blue lake below.
For those who bring their paraglider, the descent from the launch site to the landing area offers over 1,000 meters of altitude difference, providing breathtaking views of Lake Lucerne. The Eggberg is not just for scenic glides; experienced pilots can take advantage of the thermal updrafts from the Rophaien rock face opposite the launch site.
Directly below the cable car's top station, there's a convenient launch area, particularly useful when there's a south wind. The Eggbergen area is a sunny terrace extending towards the Klausen Pass, away from traffic and noise.
The surrounding region also features several lesser-known but enticing flying sites with significant altitude differences, making them suitable for enjoyable routes even on days with poor thermal conditions.
The key to successful flights here is the updraft over Lake Uri. After a coffee break, you can enjoy excellent soaring conditions. For thermal flights, pilots often head directly to Rophaien. In the afternoon, strong valley winds are common in Flüelen.
Flights can also head towards Altdorf, then into the Schächental valley and over the Klausen Pass. Be cautious of the strong valley wind from around noon over Lake Uri and Flüelen, which can make landing challenging with ground speeds dropping to nearly zero.
Watch out for cables in the Rophaien, Schächental, and Riemenstalder valleys. Soaring conditions can be tricky with strong bise winds, as the landing area in Flüelen is to the north. However, west winds can provide hours of soaring along the ridge towards Altdorf and across the Schächental to reach bise flying areas at higher altitudes.
