Description
Dunstable Downs offers an alternative southwest launch, regularly used for nice soaring conditions. Top landing is normal here. However, the site is restricted to members only, and guests are generally not welcome. Strict adherence to the many rules is required.
The site is located in the UK and falls within the Luton CTR/CTA – Class D controlled airspace, surrounding London Luton Airport. It is crucial to meet all legal requirements before flying here, as non-compliance can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment or a fine of up to £2,000.
Dunstable Downs is a popular spot for various activities, including paragliding and hang-gliding. The area is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so members are expected to respect other users and cooperate with wardens.
Only DHPC members are allowed to fly here, and they must comply with a Letter of Agreement (LoA) with the London Gliding Club (LGC) and the National Air Traffic Service (NATS). Pilots must be DHPC and BHPA members, have a minimum of Club Pilot (CP) rating, and have received the mandatory Airspace Briefing. A lifetime Airspace helmet sticker is required for flying.
The DHPC operates its own weather station at the Chiltern Gateway Centre, accessible via the club website. The London Gliding Club also uses the airspace, so pilots must be competent in flying in a mixed-discipline environment.
Wind direction ranges from Southwest to Northwest (220˚-320˚), with the site being best in a West-Northwest direction (270˚-300˚). The top-to-bottom height is 230ft (70m) from the Middle Car Park Launch, with the Trig-point being approximately 60ft (18m) higher.
The site is located about 1 mile west of Dunstable, just off the B489 Tring Road. The postcode for Sat-Nav is LU6 2GY.
Key site rules include:
- All pilots must be BHPA and DHPC members with Airspace Helmet Stickers.
- Pilots must have received the mandatory Airspace Briefing.
- The ridge is within the Chiltern Ridge Soaring Area (CRSA) with a maximum altitude of 1,500ft (457m) AMSL.
- Pilots wanting to access airspace above the CRSA must sign in electronically or at the London Gliding Club.
- CP/(T) pilots are not allowed to fly until they have a Hill Endorsement.
- CP(H) pilots with under 10 hours must discuss their flight plan with a DHPC Club Coach.
- Pilots must obey Airlaw and the terms of the LoA at all times.
- Only Pilot (P) rated members are allowed to fly cross-country (XC).
Top landing areas are designated, and pilots must land only in these areas to avoid disturbing other visitors and damaging flora. Ground handling practice is not allowed without permission from the National Trust.
Parking is available in the DHPC's metalled car park next to the Middle Paraglider launch, with a combination lock gate. Pay and display car parks can also be used. The Rangers’ car park near the Pimple is for loading and unloading only.
