Description
The launch site at Dannenfels, Germany, is a well-used hang gliding ramp that also accommodates paragliders. It offers good soaring conditions and the potential for excellent cross-country flights for both paragliders and hang gliders. However, the launch is considered challenging.
The site is managed by the 1. Pfälzer Drachen- und Gleitschirmfliegerclub e.V. Historically, this area has been a traditional hang gliding site, with flights extending as far as France. Nowadays, it is predominantly used by paragliders. Both launch sites on Donnersberg are demanding. The 'Bärenloch' (Northeast) is situated in a relatively narrow forest gap, requiring excellent wing handling skills and suitable conditions. The same applies to the Moltkefelsen (Southeast) launch site. Once airborne, the Northeast site offers good thermals and a fantastic view of the Rhine Valley.

The suitable wind direction for this site is Northeast. The launch area is quite challenging due to its location in a forest gap, which is spatially constrained. Given that the wind at the launch site is often weak, a forward launch is recommended. Excellent wing control is essential, and the conditions must be just right.
Tip: If the wind at the launch site is stronger (10-12 km/h), it is likely too strong outside the forest gap, as the trees significantly dampen the wind. Always check the wind direction in the treetops; it must be correct. The wind is channeled through the forest gap, making the direction appear correct at the launch site, but upon exiting the gap, side winds can cause severe turbulence and potential collapses.
Exercise extreme caution with stronger north winds, as they rarely provide lift and are usually very turbulent, even during landing. When circling, be careful not to drift too far back. The top of Donnersberg is flat, often lacking an upwind component, making it difficult to return to the landing site in stronger winds.
At altitudes of 500-700 meters above the launch site, be aware of aircraft approaching or departing from Ramstein. The landing area is often turbulent and thermally active, so remain calm and focused during the approach.
