Description
Elevation: 1878 m
This site is occasionally used for paragliding, offering opportunities for soaring and cross-country flights. The chairlift operates in winter and from July for a limited period.
Region: Styria, Austria
Site record: 53.4 km
This location is suitable for thermal activity, which can become quite strong in summer. However, it is also ideal for leisurely gliding under the right conditions.
The launch site faces southeast, so the wind should come from that direction. Otherwise, you may have to launch with a tailwind or from the lee side, which requires running—manageable as long as you avoid hikers on the nearby trail.
Flight Path:
After launching, fly straight briefly, then turn left before reaching the ridge. Otherwise, you will be in the lee regardless of the wind direction. The ridge lift is excellent for finding thermal sources.
Difficulty:
The launch site can be challenging due to its proximity to a hiking trail and its preference for southeast winds. However, it is straightforward when conditions are favorable.
The valley wind can be quite strong due to the narrow valley. The landing area, located next to the cable car station parking lot, is large and wide, allowing for a safe landing even in challenging conditions.
Cable Car Operation (Dec-Apr, July-Sept, Sat, Sun, Mon):
Except on Sundays, the cable car only goes up to Berghof (1600m). From there, you need to hike about an hour to reach the launch site at Hochsitz (1800m). On Sundays, both lifts operate, allowing for an easy walk from the second gondola to the launch site.
