Description

Located in the stunning region of Davos, Switzerland, this paragliding site offers an exhilarating experience for both summer and winter flying. The launch sites are situated between 2470 and 2525 meters, providing excellent opportunities for soaring and cross-country flights. In summer, you can start directly from Jakobshorn near the Engelsstatue or Brämabüel. If the wind is too strong, alternative launch sites include Jatzhütte or 'rot-wiss'. Landings typically occur near the valley station at the BolgenPlaza restaurant. During winter, the primary launch site is on the terrace of Jatzhütte. If the wind conditions are not favorable, alternative spots are available at Jakobshorn near the Engelsstatue. Winter landings depend on thermal conditions and can be either at Jatzhütte or down in Davos near the Fuxagufer chairlift valley station. Access to Jakobshorn is convenient via the mountain railway from Davos, which takes about half an hour. In winter, follow the signs to Jatzhütte, a popular spot for sun-seekers. The winter thermals rise from the forests of Sertigtal, and it's recommended to fly straight away from the slope towards the southwest to catch the thermals. The site is particularly favorable for flying even at high altitudes, with south wind conditions being ideal for soaring along the ridge above Sertigtal. In summer, if the north or valley winds are strong, Brämabüel, located a kilometer north of Jakobshorn, offers an alternative launch site with multiple directional options. The Jakobshorn launch site is just below the mountain station and features a gentle slope that transitions into a steeper scree and rubble slope. Local pilots generally avoid the launch over the rock band towards NNW due to the risk of entanglement with the Jakobshorn cable car lines. This unofficial launch site is recommended only for experienced pilots due to its difficulty. Safety is paramount, especially when launching from the piste, where skiers and snowboarders are present. Avoid flying over or under the cable car lines and make a left turn immediately after takeoff to navigate between the mast and rocks. Summer launches from this site are not recommended due to strong valley winds from the north. In case of strong north to southeast winds, launching from Jakobshorn is generally avoided due to lee turbulence. Alternative launch sites include Brämabüel or Parsenn Schatzalp on the opposite side of the valley. Davos is well-protected from westerly weather conditions and is known for its excellent thermals, even in winter. The isolated region of Graubünden offers fantastic thermal conditions, with flights often reaching high altitudes above the forest south of the Jatzlift. In summer, be cautious of strong valley winds. Cross-country flights from Jakobshorn are highly rewarding, with routes extending over Silvretta into Montafon, Unterengadin, and Inntal. Local circuits are common and recommended due to the scenic landscape. Overflying the ski area and landing at Carjöler is a unique experience admired by cross-country skiers and pedestrians alike. Wind conditions can be hazardous, with strong winds from the west to northwest making flying over Davos challenging even for experienced pilots. Winter launches in north wind conditions are problematic due to the lack of suitable launch sites, as Brämabüel is only accessible with skis. For soaring conditions, summer afternoons offer pleasant soaring along the terrain edge at Brämabüel due to stronger valley winds. In winter, moderate to strong south to southwest winds allow for soaring at Jakobshorn and Jatzhorn.
