Description
The launch site is a moderately steep meadow located near the mountain station and is regularly used. It performs well in Bise (northeast wind) conditions, making good cross-country flights possible. In stronger winds, you can walk slightly southeast to find a better launch spot.
Region: Unterwasser, Switzerland. The site record is 86.0 km.
The launch site is accessible via the Iltios cable car from Unterwasser. Launch Site:
- Open all year round.
- Directions: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW.
- Difficulty: Easy.
- Elevation: 2260 m.
- Cable car available.
- Coordinates: 9.313593, 47.154664.
- Walking time: 1 minute.
The launch sites are generally more challenging, with some having very short runways. It's advised not to launch in low wind conditions. In summer, thermal rotors can form on the southwest edge. Avoid launching during Föhn winds.
Wildlife protection: No flying at the east launch site from May 14 to June 14.
Fees: A voluntary start/landing fee of 5 CHF per day, which includes a free descent by cable car in bad weather. If the fee is not paid, the descent must be paid separately.
The Chäserrugg is a demanding flying area but offers stunning views of the Säntis, the Alpstein, and the Walensee when conditions are right.
Difficulty: Medium.
Elevation: 2230 m.
From the mountain station, head about 200 m northeast. In Bise conditions, you can soar along the entire flank of the Chäserrugg. If you don't plan a longer walk, avoid soaring too far down.
Cable car from Unterwasser: From the mountain station, head towards Hinterrugg, then descend left along the hiking trail towards Lüsis until you reach the meadow on the right side of the path. It takes about 6 minutes from the mountain station. Winter access is not possible; it's better to start from Hinterrugg during this season. Elevation: 2200 m.
The high alpine massif belonging to the Churfirsten is extremely impressive, especially the view towards Säntis and Walensee. Due to their height and exposure, the Churfirsten require considerable flying experience.
Conditions: Strong Bise and Föhn winds can be challenging, and the west wind can quickly become too strong to fly.
Soaring: In Bise conditions, you can start northeast of the mountain station. In winter, a launch site is prepared. You can soar along the edge as long as you can withstand the cold. Knowledge of launch techniques in strong winds (such as rosette, reverse, or Cobra launch, and using a speed bar) is advantageous.
