Description
This paragliding site is located in the Lechtal Alps, Austria, near Berwang, a place more commonly known for the Tiroler Zugspitzarena. The starting point for the tour is at the valley station of the Thanellerkarlift, where you can park your car.
The hike to the launch site takes approximately 2.5 to 3.25 hours with normal equipment. The trail initially follows the Thanellerkarlift's descent path northwards. After passing a fenced meadow, you turn slightly left and follow a ditch. The path then winds through a spruce forest in numerous switchbacks until you reach the summit.
There is a small launch meadow a few meters west of the summit, facing south. This launch site is steep and short, suitable for experienced pilots in ideal wind conditions (10-15 km/h from the south). In less favorable wind conditions, it can be quite challenging. Alternative launch sites are available about 200 meters below the summit along the ascent route, facing southwest and west. These are less demanding than the summit launch site. If there is some snow, better launch options are available right next to the summit cross.
The best time for a flight from Thaneller is in the autumn, as the Bavarian wind and strong thermals in the summer can make launching difficult. Landing in the narrow valley can also be challenging in strong winds. There is no official landing site in Berwang.
