Description
Located in the Tarragona region of Spain, the Castillejos paragliding site offers a unique flying experience. The takeoff altitude is 944 meters with a height difference ranging from 140 to 555 meters. This site is frequently used for soaring and cross-country (XC) flights, making it a popular choice among paragliders.
The takeoff area is a grassy field in an old military barracks, providing a smooth launch. The site record is 8.5 km, showcasing its potential for longer flights. For more details, you can visit [Alaire Club](https://www.alaire-club.com/Despegue).
Access to the site is relatively straightforward. From Tarragona, it takes about 35 minutes via the N-420 towards Falset. Avoid entering Reus and continue towards Falset. After 6 km, turn right towards Les Borges de Camp and Cornudella de Montsant. Upon reaching the top of Coll d'Alforja, turn right towards Arbolí and Castillejos. The old military camp is 6 km from there. If coming from Barcelona, take exit 34 towards Reus. From Lleida, the recommended route is via Vimbodi, Vallclara, Vilanova de Prades, Prades, La Febró, and then turn right at the Mussara junction towards Arbolí-Castillejos. The takeoff is 50 meters from the road, with parking available nearby.
For initial flights, it is advised to stay on the upper slope to ensure a safe landing. To transition to the lower slope, gain at least 200 meters above the takeoff as the lower landing zones are a bit distant. As you become familiar with the landing areas, you can enjoy fun circuits between the upper and lower slopes.
Precautions are necessary as several accidents have occurred when transitioning to the lower slope without sufficient altitude or a clear landing spot. It is dangerous to land at the takeoff with strong winds and thermals. It is recommended to try landing in the afternoon when the breeze is more laminar and avoid going too far back.
The Mas d'en Rei landing zone (GOL1) is oriented E-S-O at an altitude of 780 meters with a height difference of 140 meters. Coordinates: 31T X330951 Y4567868 (UTM WGS 84).
For vehicle access:
- 4x4 (2 km): From the Castillejos takeoff, follow the road east for 500 meters until you reach the last ruined house. The path to Mas d'en Rei starts on the right and is suitable only for 4x4 vehicles.
- Regular vehicles (6 km): From the Castillejos takeoff, follow the road west for 3 km. After a sharp left turn, you will find a small water basin next to the road. The dirt track to the landing zone starts 20 meters to the left and is suitable for regular vehicles.
