Description

Hike & Fly enthusiasts will find this thermal site quite appealing. Although no flight logs are available, it is known to be in use. Windmill Wind direction: E, SE Height: 400m NOTAM: NR981 349 500 meters south of the string take-off is the Windmill take-off, located at grid reference NR 981 349. This site faces a large bowl-shaped valley known as Glen Ormidale. It is flyable in an E or SE wind but can become dangerously turbulent with a south wind. The top landing area is confined to the take-off area. To your left, as you stand on take-off, there is a knife-back ridge. In the right conditions, this entire bowl lifts. Bottom landing is possible almost anywhere in Glen Cloy, and you can fly to Brodick beach or more often to Auchrannie Hotel's large, neat lawn, which is conveniently located next to a nice café/bar at Auchrannie Spa.
