Description
Kitesurfing enthusiasts should consider visiting Waddell Beach, located on the west coast, for an exciting experience. Not only is the beach an excellent spot for kiting, but the stunning scenery of Año Neuvo State Park to the north and the Rancho Del Oso Valley, as well as the coastal bluffs and forests of Big Basin Redwoods State Park immediately behind the beach, make for a picturesque backdrop.
Typically, the winds at Waddell Beach are most favorable for kitesurfing between noon and 1 p.m., and they tend to remain strong until around 5 p.m. The best time for kiting is usually between 2 and 4 p.m. During the spring and early summer months, the winds are often in the 25-knot range, and most kitesurfers use 6- to 10-meter kites. In the late summer and early fall, the winds are lighter, around 15-20 knots, and kitesurfers often opt for larger kite sizes. Most kitesurfers set up their equipment in front of the parking lot, so it's advisable for spectators to avoid that area when the wind is up. However, the raised parking gravel lot offers an excellent vantage point for watching kitesurfing action.
