Description
It's a unique spot in the bay since it's a huge flat water spot making it ideal to work on or learn almost any kind of transition or freestyle and I have had a ton of progression there since the chop isn't screwing me up. The wind can be variable depending on direction but I reference the gust value on the sensor more as an average. Read the texture on the water to decide where you want to try your move Works on all tides with practically zero mud walk, even on low tides. Side/ side off is normal direction but there isn't much current. It's super easy to get on foil or slog in when wind gets light since it's so flat.
Conditions: rocky shoreline with a break created at the primary launch. As long as you go out and come in aligned with that launch you shouldn't hit anything, but I always jump off early to flip my foil over coming in just in case. The biggest upwind rock at the launch is marked with a white float. Downwinders can be done from beaches upwind except during very low tides where it's still possible but not worth it slogging through the mud to get out. WNW is best direction, but anything from NW to SW can still work.
Access: Enter park via the end of Gilman Ave and drive to the end. Hunters Point Expressway access still closed. I rig right next to my vehicle and walk a short distance to the launch. There is a regular wingfoil crew that goes almost every day (early afternoon) as well as a group of locals that gather just to hang out and blast music but mostly seem harmless. I see fisherman, dog walkers and people passing through the park, but I feel it's about as safe as parking anywhere else in SF. Breakins during windy hours seem to be more rare, but you can decrease your chances by parking near other wingers and not staying too late and being the last one in after everyone left.
