Surf San Mateo

San Mateo - Ecuador San Mateo features a left point break with a sandy bottom interspersed with rocks. The wave barrels off the point and forms a substantial wall, offering rides up to 400 meters long. It works best at mid and high tide, with optimal conditions during rising and falling tides, particularly with swells from the north and northwest. Located 15 km west of Manta, access is straightforward via taxi or local camionettas. While the spot has lost some of its former glory due to port construction, it still provides decent rides, attracting a few surfers during the week and weekends. Be prepared for a competitive atmosphere, as locals can be territorial, especially when conditions are favorable. For less experienced surfers, nearby areas offer smaller, more manageable waves. Always be cautious of the rocky surroundings and ensure you’re equipped for the local surf culture.
