Description
West Rutland, Vermont, offers a paragliding and hang gliding site with an elevation of 561 meters (1839 feet) and a height difference of 405 meters. The site is known for its good thermal soaring conditions and the possibility of cross-country (XC) flights, especially in the NNE/NE direction.
The launch site features a covered metal ramp facing southwest, making it ideal for calm to moderate southwest winds. It is also usable in light south through light west winds. Hang gliding pilots generally find the launch comfortable, while paragliding pilots need to layout and pull up behind or to the right side of the ramp. The setup area is large, accommodating up to 30 hang gliders.
Wind conditions for hang gliding are best at a minimum of 5 mph, ideal at 10 mph, and a maximum of 15 mph. For paragliding, the minimum is 5 mph, ideal at 8 mph, and a maximum of 10 mph. The site is soarable on calm to moderate southwest days and usually pleasant on light south or light west days.
Pilots must have an H3/P3 rating or better to launch. H2/P2 rated pilots may launch if supervised by an official USHPA observer or an H4/P4 or higher-rated pilot who has previously launched at the site and received permission from an official observer.
The primary landing zone (LZ) is a large hayfield located 1/4 mile west of Jake's old house. Pilots should avoid parking along the driveway and only use the designated parking area near the manure pile.
Spring conditions can present challenges, as many LZs are low-lying and prone to flooding. The road to launch can also be difficult to navigate in spring, making hike and fly a recommended option.
