Tegelberg, standing at 1685 meters with a height difference of 866 meters, is one of Germany's most popular paragliding sites. It offers excellent conditions for cross-country flights, with many pilots enjoying soaring, thermal, and leisure flights. On good weekends, it can get extremely crowded.
The Tegelberg is managed by Tegelbergbahn GmbH in Schwangau, which has established guidelines to ensure smooth and safe operations. These guidelines are displayed in detail at the valley station and must be followed by all users.
If it's your first time at Tegelberg, obtain a green orientation card at the ticket office and get a briefing from a flight instructor, who is usually available. Hang gliders need a landing site card, while paragliders do not.
A notable thermal, known as the "Hausbart," reliably forms at Rohrkopf, a rock face about 400 meters below the ski run. A flight over the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle is a must. In north wind conditions, you can soar along the ridge after crossing the cable car, but ensure you maintain a safe distance and be aware of the wind strength, as there are no landing options in the lee area south of the ridge.
The landing field is exceptionally large. Paragliders land on the mountain side of the field and make a right-hand circuit (usually in east wind conditions). Hang gliders land over the Pöllat stream on the valley side of the field and make a left-hand circuit. During the final approach, ensure you cross the road with sufficient altitude. If the landing pattern doesn't work out, there are plenty of alternative fields available.
Cross-country flights are common when the weather is favorable. Beginners will find plenty of opportunities in the surrounding area, while experienced pilots have completed flights to the Dolomites, triangles, and out-and-return flights up to 150 km from Tegelberg.
Due to the high traffic at Tegelberg, prepare your gear outside the take-off area. It's best to carry your gathered wing to the launch site. Tandem flights require approval from Tegelbergbahn in coordination with local flight schools (Flugschule Tegelberg, Flugschule Fischer, and Flugschule Aktiv). Alternative launch sites are available on the ski slope during summer. Adhere to the separate landing circuits for hang gliders and paragliders and ensure you cross the road with at least 10 meters of altitude.
