Description

Elevation: 650-670 meters, Height Difference: approximately 230 meters Various possible takeoffs above the rubbish dump. Occasionally used for soaring and thermal soaring. Ideal if the wind direction is slightly too much North, or if you prefer a more secluded takeoff spot (terrain can be challenging for your lines) and don't mind a short walk. Flights Region: Spain Site record: 19.8 km Teba is particularly suitable for soaring and offers significantly more space along the ridge compared to Ronda la Vieja. Cross-country flying is somewhat problematic due to the proximity to Málaga Airport's airspace. You should not climb higher than approximately 1800 meters MSL in the approach path. Weather peculiarities for Algo: The region is generally influenced by the Azores High, except when a low-pressure system with its frontal boundaries passes through. Typically, winds in Algo range from North to Southeast due to the high-pressure core usually being located in the West or Northwest. However, the region is close enough to the coast that sea breezes can reach it as the land heats up during the day, often shifting the wind to West or Northwest in the afternoon. The sea breeze's local effects vary due to the rugged topography. For example, in Ronda, it tends to blow from the South. The sea breeze usually affects only the lower air layers up to about 1500 meters but can reach higher over or behind mountain ranges. This changing wind situation around Algo can surprise pilots unfamiliar with the area, as the wind drift during thermalling can vary significantly. Those who can adapt to these conditions can enjoy excellent cross-country flights along convergence lines or plan triangular routes with tailwinds on each leg. However, accurately assessing the situation requires a lot of experience. It's beneficial to tap into the knowledge of local pilots. Standard wind forecasts from sources like Windfinder do not account for the regional influence of the sea breeze. To assess the flyability of a day, it's more important to monitor the upper-level winds. A GFS windgram for Algodonales from NOAA can be very helpful: [NOAA Windgram for Algodonales](http://www.ready.noaa.gov/ready-bin/main.pl?Lat=36.88&Lon=-5.44). The simple weather forecast for Algo from the Spanish weather service INM can be found here: [AEMET Weather Forecast](http://www.aemet.es/es/eltiempo/prediccion/localidades?l=11050&p=11). Additionally, there is a webcam in Algo that monitors the Levante launch site: [Levante Webcam](http://www.ganterfly.de/c/webcam.htm). Keep in mind that Algodonales is much further west than Germany, despite being in the same time zone. Therefore, thermals start at least 1-2 hours later and reach their peak in the late afternoon. Flying too early increases the risk of sinking out! Guide/Accommodation: Gerhard (Gerardo), [Ganterfly](http://www.ganterfly.de), or Lijar Sur, [Lijar Sur](http://www.lijarsur.com).
