Description
The launch site, if it can be called that, is located in the border area between Italy and Switzerland. It is essentially a cliff launch with an extremely challenging surface. Aborting a launch is practically not an option.
The wind system at the pass is very complex due to its location; after 12 PM, there is usually a downdraft (lee) at the launch site. There is no landing area within glide range. The emergency landing spots in Trafoi and Gomagoi are located in the valley wind funnel, partially covered with cables, and the farmers fiercely protect their grass.
If you don't find thermals after launch, you have a real problem: you must fly over high-voltage power lines, make emergency landings in the valley wind funnel on small, partially cabled meadows, and deal with strong turbulence. The described landing site in Prad does not exist! Regardless of which meadow you land in there, a confrontation with the owner is very likely. The first official landing site is in Schluderns.
The fact is that a few very experienced pilots use the Stelvio Pass as a starting point for long cross-country flights. Safe launching, perfect knowledge of the wind and weather systems of the region, and the ability to climb after launch are ESSENTIAL prerequisites.
