Description
Located in the Boticas region of Portugal, this paragliding site offers an altitude of 1070-1100 meters with a height difference of approximately 550 meters. The site is occasionally used and provides several launch options, making it suitable for soaring and some small cross-country flights.
The launch area is situated near the Alto do Fontão, accessible via the National Road 103 connecting Chaves to Braga. You will need to take a dirt road towards the television antennas. The launch directions are NE-E-SE, with an altitude of 1150 meters and a height difference of 600 meters. This location is known for good thermal activity.
The ideal wind orientation for this site is from the southeast, ranging from 100º to 150º. The access roads are in good condition, although part of the route is on a dirt track. The site was improved in June 1999 by the Boticas Municipality and local paragliding enthusiasts from Chaves. The flight experience is enjoyable due to the significant height difference and the ample landing areas. The main thermal can be found at the southern end of the mountain range. Be cautious of potential turbulence near the cliffs when flying at low altitudes. There is a plateau on the slope towards the landing area that sometimes has strong downdrafts, but it is generally manageable.
The nearest villages are Sapiãos, close to the landing area, and Vila de Boticas, which is 6 km away. For alternative wind directions, you can try flying at nearby locations such as Vila Pouca de Aguiar, Serra da Padrela, S.ra d'Orada, Murgido, Sr.a do Moreira, and Mondim de Basto.
