Description
The Scilla launch site is occasionally used for paragliding, with some opportunities for soaring and cross-country flights. The main takeoff point is at Scilla, and toplanding is possible. Despite being the most used launch in the area, there are very few flight logs due to the limited number of local pilots. Small cross-country flights are possible from this site.
The launch area is a beautiful, gently sloping meadow, offering a stunning view over the Strait of Messina. Unlike Bagnara, dynamic soaring is the main activity here, requiring a bit of wind to stay aloft. Even with minimal wind, the landing site in Scilla, which is not visible from the launch, is easily reachable.
Directions:
From the upper end of Scilla, drive towards Melia.
Turn right towards Villago del Pino (left leads to the cemetery), passing under the highway and up the well-maintained winding road.
At the junction, turn right, passing Villago del Pino.
At the next junction, turn right again, passing a farm and over the mountain ridge, past the antennas of Monte Scrisi. The road is drivable with a car despite some potholes.
Continue slightly right downhill to a curve. Note this junction carefully to avoid getting lost on the return trip.
Follow the forest path past a potential hang gliding launch site, continuing down the road.
From here, follow the small path on foot to the launch site.
