Description
Green Point Flyers Association offers a coastal bluff flying site along the East coast of Lake Michigan. This location is known for its scenic views, with the launch facing North and South Manitou Islands at the tip of a peninsula. The launch direction is approximately 350 degrees (N-NW), and the height is around 400 feet.
The designated landing zones include a farmer's field over the back and the Lake Michigan beach around the NW corner. However, landing on the beach is tricky and should not be attempted in a N.E. crosswind. It is crucial not to fly alone at this site.
To reach the site from Traverse City, take M-72 to Empire, then head north on M-22 to the junction of M-109 and M-22. Turn left/north on M-109 and follow M-22 as it turns 90 degrees to the east towards Glen Arbor. Continue east on M-22 for about 4-5 miles until you reach Port Oneida Road on the left, marked by a small cemetery. Turn left/north on Port Oneida Road and go 1.5 miles until the pavement ends. Follow the gravel road to the right/east for about 1-2 city blocks until you reach the trailhead and parking area on the left. From there, it's a half-mile uphill hike to the launch site, which is definitely a Hang III launch with no landing below. Remember, do not fly alone here.
