Peña Escrita is a paragliding site located in the wildlife park of Almuñécar, Spain, at an altitude of 1200 meters. This site offers good thermal conditions, making it suitable for experienced pilots. Beginners should only fly here under supervision. The wildlife park features various wild animals such as wolves and bears, and also includes amenities like a restaurant, a swimming pool, and camping areas, making it an attractive spot for non-flyers as well.
The elevation difference to the sea is 1200 meters, and to the landing zone, it is 600 meters. The site is best suited for flights in wind directions from the south, southeast, and east. The launch site at 1200 meters is straightforward but not suitable for top landing due to antennas and cables behind the launch area.
The landing zone is located on the way to the launch site at 600 meters. It is a small area with terraces, requiring precise landing maneuvers. Sometimes, landing on the road near the landing zone is a better option. Due to the challenging landing conditions, this site is not recommended for beginners.
For those looking to land at the beach, La Herradura is a good option under favorable conditions.
To reach Peña Escrita, drive from Almuñécar on the old road towards Granada. A few kilometers after Almuñécar, before the bridge, there is a sign for the Peña Escrita wildlife park. Turn left here and follow the signs for 11 kilometers to the launch site. There is a toll booth at the park entrance, charging 5 euros per vehicle. A small parking area is available next to the restaurant at 1200 meters, from where you can walk a few meters to the launch site.
Special considerations include the need for beginners to fly with supervision and radio guidance, especially at the landing zone. The park is family-friendly with amenities like a swimming pool, barbecue areas, and hiking trails. However, bringing dogs is prohibited due to the presence of wild animals. Drive slowly past the feeding areas.
The site offers reliable weather conditions and good thermals, particularly in winter. The hill is not suitable for top landing but has a simple launch site. The view towards the sea and La Herradura is stunning.
