Description
Obersaxen is a lesser-known yet stunning paragliding site located above the Rhine Valley, between Ilanz and Trun, on the way to the Oberalp Pass. This area offers panoramic flights and is comparable to the popular Flims region but with fewer visitors.
The launch site is situated at an elevation of 2040 meters and can be accessed via a chairlift from Vella to Hitzeggen, followed by a short hike. Alternatively, you can take the Cuolm Sura - Mundaun chairlift directly to Mundaun. The launch area is a short, steep grassy slope, resembling a cliff. In winter, launching from the very top can be challenging due to deep snow, but descending slightly can make it easier to start in a southerly direction.
The site offers various launch directions depending on the season. In summer, you can launch towards the south and north, while in winter, launching towards the west is possible, even with skis or snowboards. The launch site is conveniently located next to the ski slope, and the ski lift personnel can guide you to the exact spot.
Flights from Obersaxen can take you into the Rhine Valley, especially towards Ilanz, or into the Val Lumnezia. The area is ideal for both cross-country and leisure flights. In winter, you can land directly above the valley station or on a parking lot if it's free. In challenging wind conditions, landing north or east of the village towards Ilanz is also feasible.
The site is within the LS-D10 Tavanas danger zone (Brigels: Flab shooting area), so it's crucial to check KOSIF for safety information. The area is excellent for thermal flying, with various ridges to the north where thermals can form.
